Hello all!  I have been in search of a worthy counterpart to the custom sugarskull I have on my back.  I really like the image that is on the background of this community.  Where would I look to find other image ideas like this, vintage style bad-ass chics, so I could collaborate a custom piece?

Real Deal Tattoo Convention in Kansas City, MO! x-posted
by Mort ([info]missmofo)
at March 14th, 2010 (02:50 pm)

So I spent all day in Kansas City, MO yesterday at the Real Deal Tattoo Convention! It was held at the Uptown Theater on the 2nd floor. I'd say there were about 20-30 booths set up (and one for tattoo removal, hahaha). A lot of them were Missouri area shops/artists, but there were a few from California, Connecticut and elsewhere. Yoji (sp?) and Darren Brass were there for some reason and were just walking around (they didn't do any tattooing that I saw). Unfortunately, the weather started to get shitty, so me and my friend had to head back to Lincoln, NE before the judging started. At least we both left with souvenirs!

Photos from the convention )

And my little present to myself. May be NSFW due to placement. )

Hi, I'm new here :) I'm Katy, eighteen.
This was my first tattoo, done by Kat at Jacks in Romford (England):

Explination )

I wanted to expand on that tattoo, by getting "I'm as free as a bird now, and this bird you cannot change" tattooed, from the song "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. One of my favourite songs, but I'm not sure how it'd look underneath or around of next to the tattoo I already have. Honest opinions are appreciated :) Thanks :)

Fragments of earlier memories of Taiwan
by shanlung ([info]shanlung)
at March 8th, 2010 (11:37 am)

I am more used to writing on my life with my birds and animals.

This entry is not on birds or animals. This is my memoirs that I wanted to write before it faded away with time.

After many years, I decided to write the above. That was not easy to write as you can read later on. That covered a strange chain of events.

There are some adult themes not suitable for minors.
There are encounters of mystical strange nature.

DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE

Artist suggestions
by papermoonriver ([info]papermoonriver)
at March 6th, 2010 (11:32 pm)

Can anyone recommend an artist whose quality and style is very similar to this? -->  www.seventattoos.com

If I could, I would fly to Edmonton to get my work done by him, but I just can't see myself affording this anytime soon.  My husband and I both want to have work done, we are previously un-inked, and want the art to be stellar.  We're willing to travel almost anywhere in the continental US, but we are in Missouri if you know anywhere within 12 hours' drive of here.

To be specific, I'm looking for someone who is great with color, works with no outline most of the time, and (this part may be weird) chooses a wide variety of subject matter.   There have been a few artists I've found whose work seemed very high quality but most of their portfolio seemed to be very dark and gory.  This shouldn't seem to matter if they are working on a commissioned piece, but to me it is a very spiritual thing to have someone embed something on your skin permanently.  I would like it to be by someone who is full of positive energy.

Thanks in advance!

Is quantum entanglement the ultimate in Buddhist attachment?
by un_malpaso ([info]un_malpaso)
at March 5th, 2010 (12:01 pm)

Is quantum entanglement the ultimate in Buddhist attachment?

After all, Upadana, that is, “attachment” or “grasping”, in Buddhist thought, is the first cause of our ignorance, and ultimately our fall from grace. Attachment, in the sense that we become emotionally attached to the transitory nature of phenomena, feeling craving and sorrow, in turn, as they form and dissipate before our eyes.

Quantum entanglement, on the other hand, is the phenomenon of dualistic nature collapsing upon itself and choosing a single outcome, based on observation of a single quantity. This has been predicted by science, and it has been shown to be true by innumerable experiments.

Could it be said, then, that nature in its initial undivided form, the “Tao that cannot be named,” is equivalent to the unknowable Divine Reality?

If so, then let us follow the metaphor farther.

The Buddhist idea of reality is that matter and all physical phenomena arise dependently from skandhas, or aggregates, and that our suffering (dukkha) occurs when we cling to individual states of each skandha.

This is relatable to the process of quantum decoherence, in which reality (a particle pair, for instance) exhibits observable behavior when it interacts with another part of its environment. This process releases information, which is thermodynamically irreversible; that is, it increases the entropy of the universe and gives rise to (among other things), our perception of time and existence from moment to moment.

This way, our minds create a model of events happening at distinct times, one after the other. Meanwhile, the Universe itself neither loses nor gains energy. It is the irreducible One.

It is the passage of information which gives rise to the appearance of existence. But information itself is only definable in terms of a subsystem relative to a larger system. The largest system of all, of course, is the Universe, which can neither lose nor gain energy as a whole.

The gathering of information is a phenomenon quite beyond the simple example of human consciousness. In fact, it includes every reaction between the constituent parts of reality. But in the context of our minds, it shows that reading the universe creates nothing more than a universe-model. The universe itself is read-only.

Some thinkers have suggested that quantum physics proves human observation creates the world as we know it. However, from both a scientific viewpoint and a strictly Buddhist viewpoint, this is not quite true. It doesn’t go deep enough.

The truth is that our interaction with the Universe creates our own individual universes of consciousness in each human mind. None of these, however, are the Real Universe. It is Reality, Dharma, Tao, the totality of everything, the unchangeable. Our perception is a phenomenon within it.

We should never mistake our own universes for the Universe itself. To do so places us at the center of Reality. True, we are the centers of our own reality; but Reality is infinitely capable of harboring consciousnesses.

As it is said in the Khajjaniya Sutta of Therevada Buddhism, "Any consciousness whatsoever that is past, future, or present; internal or external; blatant or subtle; common or sublime; far or near: every consciousness is to be seen as it actually is, with right discernment as: 'This is not mine. This is not my self. This is not what I am.'

Consciousness itself is the ultimate type of selfishness.

Looking for a Poem
by Rachel ([info]vovo2)
at March 4th, 2010 (11:38 am)

A long time ago, I read a poem posted on here about letting go, but I'm having trouble finding it.  Can someone direct me to that post?

Phrases that I can remember from that poem are:

"Look beyond what you see and let go
Look beyond what you hear and let go
Time was created by man
So he could accept the changes around him
Smile
Create your own destiny..."

Thanks!

I've long since deleted my main account on here, but I was a member of this community and also LJ_buddhists, and there was a comic strip that was posted a while back that I was hoping a member here might have and be able to post... or refer me to a link of it.

The first frame of the comic strip had Satan standing on the ground shaking his fist at the clouds, god was reaching out from behind the cloud with a puppet that mocked Satan.  The second frame had God and Satan stopping their little fight to watch a buddha float by on a rug... the buddha looked at them, then looked ahead and kept on going.

It was a pretty simple little comic, but I really liked it.  Does anyone here have it or know where it is on the net?  I feel like I've searched everywhere for it.

Thanks!
